Your rights under the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA)
Under the federal Credit Repair Organizations Act, you have the following rights:
- You have the right to dispute inaccurate information in your credit report yourself, for free, by contacting the credit bureau directly.
- You have the right to obtain a copy of your credit report from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) once every 12 months at no charge by visiting annualcreditreport.com.
- Credit bureaus must remove or correct inaccurate or unverifiable information, usually within 30 days.
- You have the right to sue a credit repair organization that violates CROA.
- You have the right to cancel your contract with any credit repair organization for any reason within 3 business days of signing.
- Credit repair organizations may not charge you until they have completed the services they promised.
To file a complaint, contact the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov or your state Attorney General.
